About Us
Sam Shultz, the owner of Next Step Builders, grew up surrounded by construction and remodeling influence. For the past 20+ years he has been doing remodeling, handyman, and new construction work both professionally and on the side. He has also led 3 relief teams from his church to Gulfport, MS and Galveston, TX after the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Irene.
In 2019, Sam started working for his brother, Matt, who had already started a concrete and construction business. By 2021, Sam was leading most of the construction projects so Matt could focus more on concrete work. Then, in June of 2021, after considerable discussion and prayer, the brothers decided it would be best for Sam to form his own company to focus completely on construction and remodeling freeing Matt’s company to focus solely on concrete and site prep work.
Prior to working for Matt, Sam was helping friends and family with projects of their own while remodeling his own houses in spare time. He also worked for 4 years as a financial advisor helping individuals make wise financial decisions that not only helped them meet their goals in the present, but put them in position to reach their goals in the future. This background in wise money management has influenced him in a way that comes out in the way he estimates projects. Making an investment in your home is a significant piece of your life--one that can affect your future as well! While you may find that we aren't the cheapest builder in the area, we're also not the most expensive. On purpose. Sam works hard to make sure the investment in your home makes sense for you financially as well as practically.
Sam has also been involved in real estate since 2012, working with property management, rentals, investment properties, flips, and more. He has helped agents in our area as their manager, real estate school instructor, and tutor/coach. Sam was named the 2013 F.C. Tucker Rookie of the Year for being the leader in both volume and units sold for the Indiana, non-Indy markets. He still maintains his real estate license and works out of the Hallmark Excellence office in Goshen.
Sam is a single dad with 3 teenaged daughters, lives in Goshen, and serves part-time as Director of Student Ministries at Jefferson Community Church. He earned his Bachelors degree from Anderson University and holds a Masters degree from Ashland Theological Seminary.
Both Matt and Sam are graduates from Fairfield High School.
Having grown up in the church, faith in Jesus plays a vital role in the way Sam and Matt each do business. Using Colossians 3:23 as a foundation for serving the Lord, Next Step Builders and Black Rock Construction both stand for strong integrity, high quality work, good communication, and relational service above all.
